Caring Community Partner Awards 2013

Ability NB was pleased to present the following Caring Community Partner Awards in 2013:

Left to right: Krista MacMillan; Courtney Keenan, Ability NB President; and Sharon Cameron.

Sharon Cameron and Krista MacMillan, Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation – Sharon Cameron is a Registered Dietitian and Krista MacMillan is an Occupational Therapist. Both are employees of the Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation – New Brunswick’s tertiary rehabilitation centre and one of our primary partner organizations. Sharon and Krista were key partners in the development and delivery of our Cooking with Ability pilot held in May 2013 in Fredericton and Moncton. These free seminars for individuals with a mobility disability covered topics such as grocery shopping & healthy eating on a budget, how to use gadgets and gizmos, including adapted devices, food safety tips, low cost ways to spruce up your dinner table and hands on preparation and tasting of a three course lunch menu. Sharon and Krista designed the curriculum, secured resources for the event including takeaways such as measuring spoons and jar openers, and provided hands on assistance to participants to ensure the best experience possible in the seminar. With little promotion, both seminars filled up quickly and evaluation results were extremely positive. Participants reported a high satisfaction with the seminars and that they opened many doors – new recipes, new devices to help with cooking more independently, and smarter ways to grocery shop on a budget. Sharon and Krista demonstrated outstanding initiative in putting together these seminars. We were pleased to present both with a 2012-2013 Caring Community Partner Award.
