Caring Community Partner Award 2016-2017

Caring Community Partner Award: New Brunswick Community College

In photo, left to right: Ability NB Board member George Woodworth recently presented NBCC’s Amanda Bent (centre) and Marilyn Luscombe with their award.

Our Caring Community Partner Award is awarded annually to a person or organization that has made a significant contribution to our organization such as a commitment to service, in-kind or volunteer support, or a government program or policy development that has positively impacted persons with a mobility disability.

Sometimes the best way to impact persons with a mobility disability is on a one-on-one basis.  At Ability NB, we believe this is true and practice this in our own service delivery methods. New Brunswick Community College mirrors that dedication to individuals with their annual Day of Service. Thousands of volunteer hours are given across their 6 NB campuses in 2 days each year!

In 2016-2017, Ability NB was lucky to take part in the NBCC Day of Service in the Fredericton area with projects to help our service participants meet their personal goals. With the help of over 20 students and staff across a three separate projects; we were able to spruce up and paint a young woman’s first apartment, get para-hockey sledges ready for the winter season, and prepare multi-sport wheelchairs for school physical education classes throughout the province.  Each team was dedicated, respectful, and eager to help.

Skilled volunteer help for individual needs is often hard to find; many of our service participants and programs go without because of the high costs of labour for simple projects.  We applaud NBCC for their dedication to the communities in New Brunswick with their Day of Service initiative which instills community pride, community service, and empathy in their students.
